I don't think they are used enough but they are still used because it's easy. It's like racial stereotypes. It's easier to lump everyone together rather than take the time to learn about individual people.
Labels provide information. In theory that isn't necessarily a negative. Misuse is the issue. We worry about the stigma they carry. But when taken too far does it limit the simple objectivity people need.
Labeling is more efficient, I believe brain research has been done that shows the human brain has a predilection to organizing and lumping information together.
I think more and more labels are being used but it is now by the mental health professions. We are making more and more accommodations for students based on their labels. It's called job security for the mental health professionals.
